Defensive Driving: 5 Tips for Staying Safe on the Road

With more vehicles on the road every year, driving peacefully on the highway is harder than ever. With car accidents creating a significant cause of stress, cost, and injury (or worse!), making sure you drive as safe as possible is always crucial. Here are seven driving tips that can enhance road safety and decrease the risk of accidents on Florida’s roads:

1. Be mindful of blind spots

Visibility is essential to preventing road accidents, particularly if you are driving a big commercial vehicle with more blind spots than a passenger vehicle. Minimizing lane changes and inspecting your side mirrors at least once every 10 seconds can be an efficient way to make sure you are always aware of what is going on around you.

2. Understand safe distance when braking

The bigger the vehicle, the longer it takes to stop. It takes an 18-wheeler 40% longer to stop completely compared to an average-sized car. For instance, in 4.5 seconds before stopping, a completely loaded tractor-trailer running 55mph on dry asphalt will travel about 390 feet farther.

3. Avoid distracted driving

One of the major causes of road accidents is distracted driving. Drivers must be extra vigilant as they operate bigger cars that are more difficult to maneuver, take longer to decelerate, and have more blind spots. Any form of distracted driving, whether it is texting, smoking, or using mobile apps, must be prevented at all costs in order to improve road safety.

4. Get plenty of rest

Be sure to get plenty of sleep the night before if you’re driving for lengthy stretches of time. Even if it’s just to stretch your legs and go to the bathroom, you should take breaks every few hours at least. To keep your energy steady, eat good meals at periodic intervals.

If possible, get someone to come with you to share the driving. Or, if they’re not up for driving, at least see if someone comes along for the ride to keep you company.

5. Check the weather

This is a tiny, far-reaching move. It will not only help you predict delays (if it’s snowing in Atlanta, you can bet they won’t plow those highways for your journey tomorrow), but it can also help you get your vehicle (and yourself) ready. Just as you might want rain boots in case of a downpour or sunglasses for those hot Florida afternoons, make sure you’re prepared for the elements.
